BioMedical Engineering Center

Biomedical Engineering, the application of engineering principles and techniques to the medical field, becomes one of the most important fields recently. The expertise of engineers and the medical expertise of physicians are combined to help improve patient health care and the quality of life of healthy individuals. Biomedical Engineering is an interdisciplinary field between science and technology and health science including engineering, medicine, science, associated medical sciences, pharmacy, dentistry, agriculture, etc.

In Thailand, there are many imported expensive medical devices. The cost of maintenance is expensive as well. To reduce these costs, there is a need to produce university postgraduates in Biomedical Engineering in Thailand. In addition, HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn desires to increase the number of experts in this field in the near future.

In Thailand, there are a few universities who offer a degree in Biomedical Engineering or related fields. There are 2 universities who offer the master degree in Biomedical Engineering, i.e, Chulalongkorn University and Mahidol University. There is a university who offers the master degree in Bioengineering, i.e., King Mongkut University of Technology Thonburi.

The international program for Master's Degree of Engineering in Biomedical Engineering will start in 2007 academic year.

Philosophy and Purposes of the Program

This program is designed to offer students an opportunity to learn theoretical aspect of Engineering, Health Science, and Science in lecture rooms and laboratories. The program emphasizes on developing students with the capacity of doing research in Biomechanics, Medical Imaging, Bioinformatics, Cell and Tissue Engineering, Cardiac Electrophysiology and Biomaterial. This includes preparing students to have a good communication and language skills as well as to understand cross culture, together with undertaking a Life-Long Learning.

       1. To produce university postgraduates who have knowledge in theoretical and practical aspects in a field of Biomedical Engineering (Biomechanics, Medical Imaging, Bioinformatics, Cell and Tissue Engineering, Cardiac Electrophysiology, and Biomaterial).
       2. To produce quality university postgraduates who can serve the country by utilizing their knowledge in developing effective medical devices.
       3. To help improving research in the area of Biomedical Engineering that will be the basis of self-supported technology in the future.
       4. To be one of the choices in improving and producing experts within Thailand without pursuing the degree outside the country.
